Healthcare and Hospitals
The Colleton Medical Center, located in nearby Walterboro, is a 131-bed acute care medical-surgical facility that has been serving the Lowcountry area of South Carolina for over half a century. A part of Trident Health System, the medical center is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and offers a full-range of diagnostic, therapeutic, emergency and surgical services which includes Colleton Ambulatory Surgery Center.
Education and Learning
School-aged children, grades pre-kindergarten through 8th, attend Jane Edwards Elementary School located on Edisto Island SC; high school students attend Baptist Hill High School in Hollywood. Both schools are operated by the Charleston County School District.
Though the Community Education Program, which is operated jointly by the Charleston County School District and the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission, Edisto Island real estate owners of all ages may explore a variety of learning and personal enrichment opportunities through an array of programs, classes and seminars offered at the Baptist Hill High School in Hollywood and other schools throughout the school district.
High school graduates may also attend the Salkehatchie Regional Campus of the University of South Carolina located in Walterboro. The campus offers an Associate in Arts degree and an Associate in Science degree, as well as coursework applicable to a baccalaureate degree awarded by other institutions.
Libraries
Edisto Island real estate owners are served by two libraries. The Edisto Library was the first branch library in the Charleston County Public Library system to be opened. Sponsored by the PTA and originally located in the school auditorium, the library was opened on June 18, 1931. The Edisto Library’s new location is in the hall of the Trinity Episcopal Church at 1589 Highway 174. The branch consists of 321 square feet and contains over 4,000 volumes. Colleton County Memorial Library operates a small public library on Station Court in the town of Edisto Beach, as well as a providing bookmobile service for locals and Edisto Island real estate owners.
Faith and Religion
Edisto Island SC is home to some 13 churches of several denominations including the historic Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island, the oldest Presbyterian congregation in continuous existence in South Carolina.
