Historic Downtown Charleston SC Recreation

Recreation For Downtown Charleston Real Estate Owners Revolves Around Water

Locals often quip that Charleston is the place where the Ashley River and the Cooper River flow together to form Charleston Harbor and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. A city resting on a peninsula, Charleston is bounded to the west by the Ashley River and to the east by the Cooper River, with the historic downtown city inhabiting the tip of the peninsula. Of course it follows that all this water combines into a water-sportsman’s dream come true.

On the Water
Those who are fortunate enough to call historic downtown Charleston their home (or second home) have easy access to the Ashley and Cooper rivers, but also to the pristine Edisto River, Charleston Harbor, and the Intracoastal Waterway, as well as the Atlantic Ocean right from the Charleston City Marina. With all those waterway options, the sky’s the limit when it comes to fun on the water. Boating and sailing, fishing and shrimping, and skiing and jet skiing are all popular activities for both young and old.

Fishing
In recent years, Charleston has caught the attention of fly fisherman both nationally and internationally. In fact, the Charleston regions is fast becoming one of the top fly fishing destinations in the world, offering a plentitude of freshwater and saltwater settings. With one quick look at a map, it’s easy to see why fishermen flock to the area. Rivers and streams, like long blue fingers, reach inland from the beaches where lakes and ponds dot the countryside.

Kayaking
The allure of its marine environment has also thrust the region into the spotlight for kayaking, the fastest growing adventure sport in the nation. That’s because the area offers ideal venues for beginners as well as the most advanced kayaking enthusiasts.

Golf and Tennis
For the landlubbers, world-class golf and tennis are just a short drive from historic downtown Charleston, S.C. In fact, golf is a 365-day-a-year sport in the area, with courses by the world’s premiere designers–Pete Dye, Rees Jones, Arthur Hills, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Tom Fabio, Jack Nickles, Robert Trent Jones–offering a variety of experiences to golfers of all skill levels.

The City of Charleston operates public tennis courts throughout the city, offering leagues, programs and lessons for players of all ages. In fact, the Charleston Recreation Department maintains a total of 60 courts, 43 of which are lighted, in convenient locations throughout the city including the Moultrie Tennis Center located in historic downtown Charleston on the corner of Broad Street and Ashley Avenue. The city provides Charleston residents with a diverse tennis program that meets the need of every age and skill level.  //
