Mount Pleasant Offers Much for Locals and Mount Pleasant Real Estate Owners
Exploring the Sites of Mounty PleasantThere’s always something to do and places to explore in Mount Pleasant, S.C.
At the foot of the Arthur Ravenel Bridge is Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum, where visitors can board the USS Yorktown, the famous World War II aircraft carrier. A tribute to all American men and women who served in the U. S. military, this site also features a World War II destroyer, submarine and Coast Guard cutter. The world’s largest museum of its type, Patriot’s Point is also home to the new Congressional Medal of Honor Museum which opened in May 2007.
Two of the area’s most popular historic attractions are located on the town’s north side. The Charles Pinckney Historic Site, located on Long Point Road, is the country estate of Charles Pinckney, a framer of the United States Constitution. In 1791, George Washington was entertained at the Pinckney Site before his historic visit to Charleston. The site also includes archeological discoveries, a 1820s tidewater cottage, and interpretations of African-American life and contributions during the colonial era.
Also located on Long Point Road is Boone Hall Plantation. Its magnificent centuries-old avenue of oaks, which served as the inspiration for Tara in the movie Gone with the Wind, greets visitors as they journey back in time to life in the Old South. In addition to the main house, the plantation’s buildings include nine slave cabins, a smoke house and a cotton gin house. Boone Hall is also host to the re-enactment of the Battle of Secessionville each November. The re-enactment of this critical battle for Charleston is a great way for the entire family to experience a piece of our nation’s history.
Music and the Arts
Mount Pleasant is minutes away from a multitude of music and arts events offered every year in downtown Charleston. The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, Spoleto U.S.A., Piccolo Spoleto, the MOJA Arts Festival, the Charleston International Antiques Show, and BB&T Charleston Food + Wine Festival headline a growing list of exiting opportunities for cultural enrichment.
Mount Pleasant is home to its own live-performance theatre. The Village Playhouse stands as proof that community theatre of the highest quality is readily available in Mount Pleasant. This Cabaret-style theater offers an eclectic mix of classics, new works and musicals. Not only do residents have the opportunity to enjoy the performances, but also to participate in them.
Shopping and Dining
Along Coleman Boulevard, which leads sun-worshipers to the area’s two beaches on Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms, a number of specialty shops and antique stores dot the streetscape. The boulevard is also home to the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market. Held on the campus of Moultrie Middle School once-a-week in late spring, summer and early fall, this family-friendly event showcases the area’s treasure trove of fruits, vegetables, flowers, preserves, dips, breads, pies, and numerous other delectable treats. Mount Pleasant residents and visitors are invited to savor a fresh meal prepared by one of the area’s irresistible food vendors while enjoying live entertainment. Clemson Extension Master Gardeners are also available to assist locals with their gardening questions. This event is sponsored by the Town of Mount Pleasant.
Shem Creek serves as the picturesque port for the area’s shrimping fleet. Seafood restaurants line both sides of the creek offering not only a view of activities along the creek, but also superb seafood dining – all in the atmosphere of a small fishing village. Meanwhile, offshore fishing party boats are moored along the docks.
The seasoned shopper can easily spend a day at Mount Pleasant Towne Centre, one of the town’s newest shopping venues, ambling through the many plentiful stores and shops operated by national and regional retailers, as well as local boutiques and a day spa. A 16-cinema complex and a variety of restaurants, ranging from fine dining to sandwich shops and pizza, are also available at Towne Centre. Even as the popularity of Towne Centre continues to grow, a number of other strip shopping centers are cropping up along U.S. Hwy. 17 to serve the growing population.
